My child­hood knowl­edge of men shav­ing care came from watch­ing tele­vi­sion shows that always depicted our favorite TV dad get­ting a shave at the local bar­ber shop.  I wouldn’t say that the old-fashioned bar­ber is quite extinct, but he is def­i­nitely an endan­gered species.  I expect none of my read­ers, most of whom have been shav­ing men for many years, has ever had the plea­sure of a tra­di­tional straight razor shave.  Our dads taught us to shave with a dis­pos­able razor and the white, foamy shav­ing cream in a can that we applied too lib­er­ally.  And we took up that rou­tine for the rest of our lives, for bet­ter or worse.  Turns out, it was for the worse, at least for our skin.  But don’t worry, the art of men shav­ing care from the bar­ber shop is not gone, it has evolved into a com­pre­hen­sive shav­ing and skin care reg­i­men at home for mod­ern men.

Today, we have easy access to so many prod­ucts (e.g., razors and razor blades, shav­ing cream, shav­ing gel, prep oils, after shaves, face washes, heated facial cleansers, scrubs, mois­tur­iz­ers with and with­out SPF, vit­a­min serum, etc.) that shav­ing has become some­what of a daunt­ing task.  So, in the absence of a good bar­ber (and I do rec­om­mend get­ting a shave from a bar­ber at least once in your life­time), my goal is to scour through our choices and share the mod­ern essen­tials of men’s skin care, sug­gest some of the best men shav­ing prod­ucts, and maybe teach some old dogs new tricks.

I’m going to admit to you here and now that I do care about how I am per­ceived.  I’ve put in a lot of time and money to get where I am today; I don’t want to be seen as past my prime.  I went to col­lege.  I got a good job.  I joined the gym and lost that extra bit of weight.  I put in over­time at work to get a pro­mo­tion.  I’m only in my for­ties and I think I look bet­ter now than I ever have in my life and I want to stretch my good looks for as long as I can.  And that’s where a good men’s skin care reg­i­men comes in.

Evo­lu­tion of Men Shav­ing and Groom­ing Care

Men shav­ing care doesn’t stop with shav­ing (it doesn’t start there either — see my arti­cle How to Shave for Men).  And men’s skin is not the same as women’s skin.  That’s kind of why they spe­cially for­mu­late these prod­ucts for men, because there really is a dif­fer­ence that is skin-deep.  I’m sure there are other dif­fer­ences, but I’m just going over men’s shav­ing and skin care here.  But, sim­i­lar to the fairer sex, we do need to hydrate, mois­tur­ize, block out the sun, and maybe even stave off some wrinkles.
