Men Shaving — Guide to Men’s Shaving Care and Grooming
Men Shaving — Essentials of Men’s Shaving Care and Grooming
My childhood knowledge of men shaving care came from watching television shows that always depicted our favorite TV dad getting a shave at the local barber shop. I wouldn’t say that the old-fashioned barber is quite extinct, but he is definitely an endangered species. I expect none of my readers, most of whom have been shaving men for many years, has ever had the pleasure of a traditional straight razor shave. Our dads taught us to shave with a disposable razor and the white, foamy shaving cream in a can that we applied too liberally. And we took up that routine for the rest of our lives, for better or worse. Turns out, it was for the worse, at least for our skin. But don’t worry, the art of men shaving care from the barber shop is not gone, it has evolved into a comprehensive shaving and skin care regimen at home for modern men.
Today, we have easy access to so many products (e.g., razors and razor blades, shaving cream, shaving gel, prep oils, after shaves, face washes, heated facial cleansers, scrubs, moisturizers with and without SPF, vitamin serum, etc.) that shaving has become somewhat of a daunting task. So, in the absence of a good barber (and I do recommend getting a shave from a barber at least once in your lifetime), my goal is to scour through our choices and share the modern essentials of men’s skin care, suggest some of the best men shaving products, and maybe teach some old dogs new tricks.
I’m going to admit to you here and now that I do care about how I am perceived. I’ve put in a lot of time and money to get where I am today; I don’t want to be seen as past my prime. I went to college. I got a good job. I joined the gym and lost that extra bit of weight. I put in overtime at work to get a promotion. I’m only in my forties and I think I look better now than I ever have in my life and I want to stretch my good looks for as long as I can. And that’s where a good men’s skin care regimen comes in.
Evolution of Men Shaving and Grooming Care
Men shaving care doesn’t stop with shaving (it doesn’t start there either — see my article How to Shave for Men). And men’s skin is not the same as women’s skin. That’s kind of why they specially formulate these products for men, because there really is a difference that is skin-deep. I’m sure there are other differences, but I’m just going over men’s shaving and skin care here. But, similar to the fairer sex, we do need to hydrate, moisturize, block out the sun, and maybe even stave off some wrinkles.
